Kagan nomination heads to full Senate

without comments

Dear Friend,

Earlier this week, President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan was approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 13-6 vote and is now headed to the Senate floor for final confirmation.

Now the full Senate must decide whether to "rubber stamp" Kagan’s nomination and continue to ignore the serious issues of her judicial philosophy and views on life and marriage. The vote is expected to take place within a couple week’s time.
As we have been sharing with you for weeks, we must expect Ms. Kagan to be a judicial activist if confirmed to the Supreme Court–especially on the important family issues of life and marriage.
Last week I wrote how Ms. Kagan’s involvement with two medical associations’ position statements on partial-birth abortion was a Supreme Court catalyst in keeping the heinous procedure legal for a number of years. In addition, Ms. Kagan supports the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act, which currently protects marriage as the union of a man and a woman at the federal level and prevents states from being forced to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states.
This Supreme Court nomination is about much more than academics and philosophies, as important as those things are. It’s about whether our country will continue down the path of devaluing marriage and the sanctity of human life. What our country needs are strong marriages, strong families and a strong culture of life!

Petitions Delivered To The Senate!
While the confirmation process thus far has been quite disappointing, I have been very encouraged by the tremendous response to the "Stand for Marriage" petition sponsored by our social policy affiliate, CitizenLink (formerly Focus on the Family Action). Thanks to thousands of concerned citizens, we delivered petitions directly to 22 U.S. senators’ offices last week–part of an effort that rallied more than 125,000 citizens to "stand for marriage," and call upon Congress to only confirm judges who will uphold marriage and rely upon the original understanding of the Constitution.

In this week’s CitizenLink Report, we highlight the Senate petition delivery and look ahead to the next step in the Kagan confirmation process. Watch this week’s video.

Despite politicians who seem to be increasingly out-of-step with the values mainstream Americans hold, I remain encouraged. The faithfulness of thousands of men and women to make their voices heard is a beacon of light and truth for our nation. Thank you, as always, for your continued prayers, especially in the next few weeks leading up to the final vote on Elena Kagan’s confirmation.

For faith and family,
Signed: Tom Minnery
